Reading Notes: The Divine Archer, Part B

In the second part of The Divine Archer, it concludes the epic love story between Rama and Sita. They have been through so much together. She has twin boys with Rama, but he does not know of them. Once the boys are all grown they go to him to recite stories and they learn of their connection to one another. Rama gets excited as he learns the feelings that Sita still has for him. He feels the same way. This part of the story reminds me of a lot of love stories that we see today. Two people fall in love but then become distant to eventually learn they want to still be together. I could take this idea that is in The Divine Archer and turn it a little more modern. Have the reason for the split up be different than in the actual story. This will create a twist but will resolve in the end. Rama and Sita long for each other and know that they need to be together.

Or, what if this idea of them destined to be together does not actually work out? I could write a story about how they feel a strong connection to a person, but they do not know who this person is. Rama and Sita both believe that it is one another, but this idea is squashed when they meet up with one another. But by them meeting up, they meet the people that they actually are suppose to end up with. This idea kind of follows some plots of television shows or novels that are written today. An example is the movie Enchanted. I could follow the same premise and have a similar outcome.

I also admire the figurative language that is in the second part. I noticed a specific line and it was “So people came as flies to the honey” (72). I can visualize exactly what the author is going for. I hope that in this upcoming writing I am able to add language that will make the reader be able to see the words rather than just read them.

Reading Notes: The Divine Archer, Part A

From the very first page, you are able to see how extravagant the city is. They mention all sorts of gems and metals to decorate. When all the of sons are born, it is obvious who is the favorite. Rama has a lot of markings on him that show how noble he is. I like this idea of having a character be physically different and this difference means that they are special in a good way. It shows that the universe wanted him to be born noble and respected.

I like the way that this story is written. It is from an outsider’s point of view and this means that they are able to add a lot of detail to all of the characters that are involved in the story. Writing stories in this style allow the writer to have a lot more freedom in writing as it is not for just one specific character. Last week I wrote a story from this point of a view and I enjoyed doing that, but to get more practice I might try to write a story from a character’s point of view. This will allow me to be attentive to just one character and truly make them exactly the way that I want.

I want to write a story where two character’s love each other the way that Sita and Rama do. Rama is willing to perform any task to be with Sita. He heard her bangles and knew that he wanted to be with her. Having characters be almost blinded by love will create an interesting twist to any story. They may be right for each other but they may not. It all depends on the personality of the character’s and if they want to sacrifice parts of themselves for one another. In this story, Rama will do anything for Sita. I want to write a story that is based off of Rama’s love for Sita.

Week 3 Storytelling: Indie's Revenge

Our story starts with a timid girl named Indie. She is an only child of a family that is anything but inviting. She grew up with a lack of an ability to converse which meant she had a very small amount of friends. It’s not her fault, she was just so shy she never knew what to say. Indie’s special power did not help the situation much either.

Indie does have one best friend. That friends name is Sammy. She is the better half of her.

Sammy is very social and kind towards everyone. She knows exactly what Indie is thinking at all times. Without Sammy, Indie is ten times more likely to have social anxiety… especially when dealing with the popular group at school.

This group consists of 4 girls that call themselves The Talk. They are all pretty even in popularity, with the exception of Julia. Julia is the head of the group and therefore the head of the school. She has platinum blonde hair with bubble gum pink lips on a daily basis. Julia and Indie have never truly gotten along. They have grown up through grade school together, but they were never able to understand one another. This was especially true on the last week of school before Winter Break.

Indie, Sammy, Julia and the remaining members of The Talk were all in the same algebra class. It was time for finals and Indie was apprehensive about using her powers. Her powers consist of the ability to see exactly where a person is in a certain point in time and also to alter a vision to provide false information. If Indie were to use her powers, she could see the final exam and the correct answers from the professor. Indie refuses to cheat her way through her education. Unfortunately, this is not the same morals everyone in her class has.

Julia swiftly walked up to Indie and asks for the answers without any hesitation. In the past Indie has been the victim of Julia’s cruel needs of wanting to see what the future holds. Sammy would be there to support Indie in the right direction, but Indie would never follow as Julia was extremely convincing.

“I really need those answers Indie. I have a couple parties coming up so if I could have them then I would not have to worry about studying” said Julia. “And if you don’t give me the answers, then I will make your social life more miserable then it already is.”

Indie quickly accepted the request and said “okay, I will have them for you tomorrow”.

Indie knew that she needed to talk to Sammy.

After catching Sammy up on the situation, she had a lot of advice.

“You are better than this Indie. It is immoral and not to mention the highest form of academic misconduct. Why should she benefit from your powers? You have been so good about always doing what is right, why should Julia change that? So what if she ‘ruins your social life’! Anyone that knows you knows that you are a great person and that is all that matters.”

Indie had a lot to think about. She knew what the right thing to do was, but she was afraid of the possible backlash.

It was the next day and algebra had just begun. Julia strutted up to Indie and asked for a sheet with the answers. Indie reluctantly hands her a paper with the questions and the answers to those questions. Julia did not even thank her but rather sat back at her desk and shared the answers with The Talk. Little do they know what Indie had truly done.

Fast forward to the next day. The final algebra exam had concluded and the teacher was handing back grades. Julia and The Talk were dumb founded when they saw a big fat 0 in red ink. Julia stood up and said

“Indie! You are OVER!”

And with that said, Indie promptly arose and said “I’m not, but you are”. She was finally able to stand up for herself. Julia and The Talk were all sent to the principal’s office for a talk about having to repeat algebra and about the suspicion of all the ladies getting the same grade.

Indie approached Sammy and said

“I really thought about everything that you said. I am better than Julia and I think I showed that. I did give her a sheet of answers. That is what she asked for. She never said that they had to be correct.”

Authors note: This story was fun to write! I took the characters Sampati and Indrajit from the Ramayana and incorporated them into the story. These characters were both able to see certain situations through visions. The character named Indie is a short form of Indrajit. Indie is a good character for most of the story, but when she alters her vision to give Julia the wrong answer is when she shows signs of Indrajit. In the Ramayana, Indrajit showed Rama that Sita is dead when she actually isn’t. The character Sammy is short for Sampati. Sammy was just a good character in the story that wanted the best for her friend.
